Where did the summer go? And why does it always feel like it has ended too soon? Shorter days, winter tires, and frigid conditions are right around the corner. If you have ever thought about spending the winter months outside of Canada, there may be more options than you think.  Here are our top destinations, with Sotheby’s International Realty affiliates, for Canadian snowbirds to escape the winter:

Snowbirds waste no time heading to Florida for the winter, even leaving before the leaves begin to fall. It is because Florida means one thing:  sunshine.  Add to sunshine:  golf, beach walks, and shopping.  Popular places like Palm Beach, Naples, Sarasota and Fort Lauderdale / Miami offer an abundance of it.   Lesser known destinations, like the islands of Captiva, Sanibel, Anna Maria and Marco Island; or the car museum in Venice; or the quaint beach town of Delray.  They can offer certain advantages, such as a quieter lifestyle and less overcrowding.  Regardless, all provide easy access to Florida’s famous beaches.

Beautifully mild winters make Arizona one of the most pleasant escapes for Canadian snowbirds. Many boomers and retirees call Scottsdale and Phoenix home for the winter, with an abundance of accommodations.  With Arizona being inland, the climate is very dry. December to March temperatures hold steady around 20°C for places like Scottsdale, Quartzite, Sun Cities and Yuma. Not to mention, with over 300 golf courses in the state, this is truly a golfer’s paradise!

Mexico is the most popular destination for snowbirds, after the United States. Destinations like Puerto Vallarta have a large expat population for its sunny winters. Places like Playa del Carmen have traditionally attracted younger snowbirds; however, recently, its quality lifestyle has been very attractive to boomers. You’ll also find many Canadians in San Miguel de Allende, Oaxaca, Guadalajara, and Lake Chapala. This winter, immerse yourself in culture, art and beaches in Mexico.

If you’re willing to venture across the pond in search of warmer weather, you will discover a wealth of old culture, wines, seafood and castles to explore in Portugal. Although it is an unfavourable exchange rate, it is only a fraction of the cost of neighbouring European countries. Many Canadians choose Lisbon as a winter escape, as long-term rentals and international flights are reasonably priced. Mild winters, stunning golf courses and costal views make Portugal an incredibly attractive destination for snowbirds.
